Common questions

Everything families ask us

Straight answers. If yours is not here, send it through on the contact page and we will reply personally.

Will I lose my backup power?

No. You choose how much of the battery to keep for a blackout, for example 30 percent, and Watt iQ never dips below it, no matter how high the price goes.

Do I need a new battery or new hardware?

No. Watt iQ is software that talks to the battery you already have. If your battery can be controlled remotely, we can usually work with it.

What does it cost?

Subscriptions are expected to start at A$25 a month, with final pricing confirmed before launch. The aim is for a typical household to earn back many times that.

Is it hard to set up?

You set your goals once, connect your battery and switch your electricity plan to Localvolts. From there Watt iQ runs on its own and shows you what it saved each month.

Where is Watt iQ available?

Watt iQ trades through Localvolts, which is authorised in the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania. Other states will follow as retailers open up their five minute prices.

What is Localvolts and why do I need it?

Localvolts is an electricity retailer that passes through the real five minute wholesale price and lets neighbours trade with each other. That is what makes smart timing valuable. Localvolts provides the market and the connection, and Watt iQ provides the brains that decide what the battery does.

How much more will I actually earn?

Our target is to lift a typical household's battery value by 25 to 40 percent compared with the default self-consumption mode. Your result depends on your battery size, your solar, how your household uses power and what prices do. The monthly report shows the real figure for your home.

Will trading wear out my battery faster?

Watt iQ respects your battery's warranty cycle limits as a hard rule. If a trade would push past them, it does not happen. You can also tell Watt iQ to go easier on the battery than the warranty requires.

What happens in a storm?

When a storm is forecast, Watt iQ fills the battery ahead of time so you start any outage with a full charge, then holds your backup reserve as always.

Can I still see my battery in its own app?

Yes. Your manufacturer's app keeps working. Watt iQ sits alongside it and gives you one view of the whole household, including the money side.

I have three-phase power. Does that matter?

It helps. Many three-phase homes have a battery connected to one phase only, which means it cannot cover loads on the other two. Watt iQ balances across all three phases so the battery works for the whole house.

What about my electric car?

Smart EV charging is on the roadmap. The plan is for the car to charge when power is cheapest or the sun is out, using the same five minute decisions as the battery.

Can I cancel?

Yes, at any time. Your battery simply goes back to its default settings.

Who is behind Watt iQ?

Watt iQ is a self-funded Australian company. We grow from what our customers pay us, not from outside investors, so our only job is to make your battery worth more to you.
